Richie Chen is a painter and designer based in New York and New Jersey. His work investigates ritual as a passage into portals, drawing from the Symbolist tradition.
Chen holds a BFA in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and studies painting at the Art Students League of New York since 2018 under the mentorship of Marshall Jones and Tommy White. Working with Jones, he developed his approach to painting combining French academic tradition with digital tools. He also studies ceramics at the League under Yasumitsu Morito, expanding his practice into three-dimensional sculpture.
Chen has exhibited in group exhibitions at the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery and Springs Projects. He is the recipient of the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards Travel Grant and the Takifuji International Art Award, and completed a residency at Art Food Poland in Cmielow. He maintains an active career in design alongside his studio practice.
